Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interview
This 1964 interview published in 1965 was the longest that Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. ever granted to that point, and possibly ever. King was a member of the executive committee for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and in 1955 answered their call to lead the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama that was kicked off by Rosa Parks. In 1957, he became President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). In this interview, King talked to Playboy about his personal life, the power of non-violence, the church, SCLC, and his feelings about the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

In this interview given in the same year, Cleaver opens up and explains the ten points of the Black Panther Party, his feelings on white Americans and the establishment, and the events of the shooting in which he was involved in April of 1968. Huey Newton founded the Black Panther Party for Self-defense in 1966 with Bobby Seale while the two were studying at Merritt College in Oakland, California. Newton started studying at the college in 1958, but was arrested and served an eight-month jail term in 1964. In 1961, he was introduced to the Black Muslims and Malcolm X’s teachings on armed self-defense. He began school again in 1965 after he was paroled and it was then he met Seale. Newton was arrested again for his involvement in a shooting with police officers and was jailed in 1967. He remained there until 1971, and was rarely seen upon his release. In this rare 1973 interview, Newton spoke to Playboy about the Party’s community involvement, the coming revolution to change the social order, the fallout from Eldridge Cleaver jumping bail and leaving the country, and Newton’s experiences in prison.
