Timothy Leary

The controversial Harvard professor specializing in the area of LSD and psilocybin mushrooms, clinical psychologist Timothy Leary proposed in the late-60s that mind-altering drugs could be used to usher in a new era of thinking. Heralded by the young college movements and others in the psychological community, he was also equally disavowed by those in the traditional medicine and psycho-pharmaceutical field. Beginning his own movement centered in Haight-Ashbury, a borough in San Francisco, he attracted legions of devoted followers including the Beatles. In September of 1966 Playboy sat down for an interview with this enigmatic figure for a very lengthy discussion about LSD, the role of drugs in society, and whether or not such substances posed a danger to the masses.
