Vietnam reaches its eighth year of conflict, and it is clear that the peace protests and radical changes on college campuses did not have the effect that so many wanted. In September of 1973 Playboy printed within its pages an advertisement for the United States Army. This demonstrates a massive shift in the magazine’s focus and reflects the exhaustion many felt by the time the war neared its end two years later. A magazine such as Hefner’s that once prided itself on being the voice of those against the violent conflict that claimed so many young men now found itself now promoting the very enemy it once rose against.
